I recently posted that I had reached an affirming decision regarding my direction in quilting. I am a hand quilter, no doubt about it, and it’s time that I recognized that fact and dedicated myself to it 100 percent. That decision was clearly affirmed yesterday when The Woodworker and I visited the Amish Quilt Exhibit at the Flint Institute of Arts.
All of the quilts in this exhibit were hand quilted, and I was amazed at the tiny stitches and beautiful designs. The art is not as much in the choice of colors or fancy patterns in the fabrics for me as it is in the quilting itself. This is what I love.
The quality of these photos is not good, and I apologize for that. Taken with my Blackberry so as to not use a flash, they are poor at best. But I hope it gives you an idea of what is present at the exhibit. All of the quilts are from the collection of Marsha and Thomas French, and they are stunning. If you are able, please go see this beautiful collection.
I am going to get up to that before it closes. I love hand quilting too and it is something that relaxes.
ReplyDeleteGlad to hear that you will continue with your hand quilting. It really is an art and I enjoy looking at just what perfectionists the Amish are with their beautiful quilting.
Looks like I need to visit there! I love to see the work others have created, it is so inspiring :) Thanks Caron for sharing.
ReplyDeleteMy daughter took lessons and was part of ensembles for years there at the Institute of Music... Sadly, I never made it over the the Arts portion. :)
I'm glad that you feel that way about hand quilting. I feel that way too! Pippa
ReplyDeleteI would just love to see that in person. I love hand quilting. Machine is fine if I'm in a hurry, but there's nothing like the slow, steady pace or the beauty of hand quilting.
ReplyDeleteI wish hand quilting would make a comeback. I have seen a bit of pretty machine work but for the most part machine pieced quilts are quilted in big feathery all over patterns without regard to the pieced designs. By hand, one really has to pay attention to those seems. Yes, some of my quilts take years to complete but that's how it is and they are mine.
